Advances in Porous Biomaterials for Dental and Orthopaedic Applications
نویسندگان
چکیده
The connective hard tissues bone and teeth are highly porous on a micrometer scale, but show high values of compression strength at a relatively low weight. The fabrication of porous materials has been actively researched and different processes have been developed that vary in preparation complexity and also in the type of porous material that they produce. Methodologies are available for determination of pore properties. The purpose of the paper is to give an overview of these methods, the role of porosity in natural porous materials and the effect of pore properties on the living tissues. The minimum pore size required to allow the ingrowth of mineralized tissue seems to be in the order of 50 μm: larger pore sizes seem to improve speed and depth of penetration of mineralized tissues into the biomaterial, but on the other hand impair the mechanical properties. The optimal pore size is therefore dependent on the application and the used material.

Fabrication of Porous Segments Using Ti-6Al-4V Chips for Orthopaedic Applications
Different methods have been evaluated for manufacturing the porous Ti6Al4V alloys according to decreasing stress shielding phenomenon and increasing mechanical compatibility between the metallic components and the host tissue. For this purpose, in this work Ti6Al4V alloy chips were pressed under 400 MPa pressure and then samples were categorized and heated into two groups at 1000 and 1150℃ unde...

متن کاملAdditively Manufactured Porous Biomaterials and Implants
Recent advances in additive manufacturing (AM) techniques (otherwise known as 3D printing) have enabled fabrication of a new class of porous biomaterials (Figure 1) with arbitrarily complex and precisely controlled topologies that e.g. resemble the geometry and micro-architecture of (trabecular) bone. Since the geometry of scaffolds and biomaterials is an important factor in bone tissue regener...

متن کاملPorous Titanium for Dental Implant Applications
Recently, an increasing amount of research has focused on the biological and mechanical behavior of highly porous structures of metallic biomaterials, as implant materials for dental implants. Particularly, pure titanium and its alloys are typically used due to their outstanding mechanical and biological properties. However, these materials have high stiffness (Young’s modulus) in comparison to...
